A warden can ask to be unpaired, I assume at any time. Sorry to say I don't think inmates get the same escape clause, but if it got desperate I think you could make a good case for him ringing up the Admiral himself.
I don't have any plans to ask to be unpaired. But after speaking to him, I worry what might happen if the Admiral did change his mind. It seems like he's placed a lot of his self-worth on this.
[Loki's real concern is, of course, what happens when he fails. When he gets no better and Betelgeuse gets discouraged. Getting unpaired by the Admiral's decision might be preferable to Betelgeuse taking his inmate's lack of improvement and blame it on himself.]
Sounds like you care too. Which is a great foot to start on.
He's still getting things worked out himself probably - hopefully he won't judge himself based on it, the boat'll keep him growing too. In the meantime you can help each other along.
If you mean learning from inmates might make them regress, the Admiral probably picks people with a little more staying power. Or it's what demotion's for, in any other case.
I think it's important for empathy. We all have to be put through the same wringers or it'd never be near fair enough to get stuff done.
There's actually some sense to it when you put it like that.
I don't like that I'm being persuaded that not all wardens are self-righteous hypocrites. It makes it very difficult to be bitter and dedicated to making no effort whatsoever.
And I don't mean to imply they don't matter, I just think focusing on just one or the other is losing part of the experience.
And I wouldn't call charming tricking, I can promise you she was very willing and informed. Surprisingly informed, by the end.
I guess I can't say there aren't types who could warm you as part of the trick, and I'm not going to pretend I know whether or not you're that type. But I do think you're smart, and smart people ought to cotton on to the fact something like that would get noticed quick somewhere this small, and working me wouldn't get you anything. If this was part of some play, my advice would be to conserve the energy.
[Loki's glad this isn't a video call. He hates not knowing how to respond at the best of times. This is setting off all kind of associations with all the other people who were stupid enough to trust him, except he knows none of them were truly stupid. Thor even managed to beat him at his own game. And he'd still trusted him. Still intended on bringing him to Earth and vouching for him.
Had Loki just won the game of manipulation? Is that all he's done here?
She's right that it would be difficult to keep up. She isn't stupid. Very few of the people on this boat are.]

Have you ever heard of the Admiral changing his mind about a pairing?

He cares a lot.

You sound pretty self aware.
Clearly the worst part is that I like you, and I'm specifically hoping you don't end up making no effort whatsoever.

Best thing about breaches: they always come from someplace genuine, and nobody gets to game them.

And besides. He certainly charmed her. Who's to say I'm not doing the same?

I hope you don't come to regret it.
